Photo Hunt ~ Chipped

Photo Hunt #146: This week's theme brought two things to mind for me. Both are damaged. But chipped can mean something is damaged and has lost all it's value. Or chipped can show how things have endured through time and the look even becomes popular to copy - particularly with houses and wanting to make new construction look old. I've chosen to illustrate both sides of "chipped".

1. This literally made me ill. I am a dish collector and this is a hard to find piece of vintage Fiesta. It's a promotional figure 8 tray in turquoise that was only sold for a short time. It also comes in a cobalt version, which was much more common, though it's not so easy to find either. I bought this tray on eBay and it was poorly packed. Eventually I was able to replace this with a flawless tray, but it took me several years to find one.

2. The other way I am looking at chipped is to view it as things that endure through time. This is often seen in older houses and in older cities. Many times old brick will be covered with stucco or plaster to make it look newer. Then as time passes, the plaster begins to fall off. People begin to appreciate the charm of such a look. Here are three views of the same chipped plaster on a building in New Orleans. I see things like this copied on HGTV all the time. But the remakes seldom really match the real thing.

And although I didn't do it on purpose, I just realised that both my views of chipped feature turquoise. Must be some kind of synchronicity involved.

  1. Great takes on the theme. I would ahve been so annoyed to receive chipped goods. As for teh building it certainly looks as if that brickwork is in dire need of repointing! Happy weekend

  4. What happened to the tray? Good thing you find a replacement. Happy hunting

  5. The tray, in that condition, became useless to a collector. In order to keep it from being a total loss and disaster, the damaged tray is now in more pieces as part of a pique assiette work.

  6. Great set of pictures for the theme. The chipped wall of the building looks interesting. It seems like it's a frame hanged in there.

    Thanks for dropping by!

  9. Nice to see what is behind the plaser now that it's chipped. Prefer the brick behind it to the plaster.

  10. No wonder I thought the buildings were French.
Deco? Have you seen the TV series of Agatha Christie's 'Poirot'?

  14. Re that building: Charming... but I hope that chipped like that doesn't mean that damp and such will get through inside!

  15. Oooh - receiving a chipped plate and one that is rare must have ruined your day, week, and perhaps month. I like how you show the chip to the side....this must have been your photo to use in your complaint about the poor packing.

If you have time, please check out my photo hunt for the week.

  16. I really like the photographs of the building in New Orleans. There are a lot of buildings like that down there. My contribution this week is very similar, but the building is not as usable.

  28. The blue shutters really matches the blue figure 8 plate! And that happens to be one of my favorite shades of blue!

I hope you have time to drop by my photohunt post this weekend -- I'm teaming up with Quaker Oats and Share Our Strength in their campaign against childhood hunger in the US.

  29. Good choices... I was going to post a photo of some of the remaining family porcelain which is rather more than just "chipped".

I may add a photo to my posting.

  30. Both great choices for the theme. That crumbling building facade is a thing of beauty. Love the colors and teXtures in these pieces. Nice work.

  31. Oh, I think that would be more painful than my chipped tooth! I just started collecting Fiesta ware, finding the odd piece in second hand stores, etc. That is an amazing piece! I've never seen one like that.

  32. The chipped walls from the building seem to tell a story.
Perfect for this week's theme :)

  36. Nice views on this week's theme. :) Both photos are well taken!

  37. Funny about the turquoise synchronicity. (I wonder if "color synchronicity" could be considered "synchromicity"?)

Your selections for the theme are beautiful!

  38. Beautiful pictures! Oh, what a shame about the Fiesta ware platter. The building is so neat!
