Ruby Tuesday 5-11-10

MaryT/TheTeach over at Work of the Poet started a photo meme for people who have photographed something red. I love red. Red just jumps out at me. When I look at shelves of books, the ones I notice first are the ones in red bindings. Just out and about in the world, red catches my eye. If there is red in a photo, that's what I'm looking at. I have lots of photos with red.

This week's photo was made by DD#2 at Ellis Island in March of 2009 during her Interim Drama Trip to NYC. Interim is always the week before Spring Break and all students from 7th grade up participate. Interim is a learning experience outside the classroom and there are many different opportunities from which to choose.

The youngest group goes to school and takes life skill classes, such as sewing, cooking, basic automobile knowledge (how to change a tire, etc.), ballroom dancing, how to balance a chequebook, etc. As the children get older they can mentor younger children, shadow professionals for a career in which they are interested, work for Habitat for Humanity, take a special studies workshop, or go on various trips geared toward particular disciplines.

My daughters take after their mother and tend to want to travel. (Hey, there was a reason I worked at a travel agency!) The New York Drama Trip was mostly theatre experiences. Many shows were seen and the kids got to go backstage and meet actors, directors, stage managers and learn about the tech for the shows. They also took in some of the tourist sites such as the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, Ground Zero, Times Square and others I don't recall at the moment.

There really are a lot of reds in this shot: the brick building, the Ellis Island sign and the structure over the walkway to the building. That walkway just seemed to draw me in.

Happy Ruby Tuesday!

  7. Urban rubies are all around, and it often begins with the brickwork. The entry framework is a great crimson, suitable for Tuesdays. The trip seems so special, especially when you can converse with the actors and learn a thing or two about the craft of acting...

  10. Hi Becky, I had forgotten that the buildings at Elis Island were had a lot of red. And I don't think that cover to the walk-way was there when we went in 2003.
It is nice that you could go with your daughters. I think it is nicer still that you instill a travel-lust in their souls.
We did that way with our daughter also. Although a grown woman she was there with us. Or we were with her, she was running the NYC Marathon.

Happy RT! Thank you for peeking in on me. Yes, you were correct. Mrs. Jim does use those RED Hots for cooking. :)

  12. You did find a lot of red in one spot! I also read your Mellow Yellow post; I find red and yellow together often, they seem to be natural partners for some reason...In your blog, I found them right next to each other!

    Thanks for coming by!
