Photo Hunt ~ Chipped

Photo Hunt #146: This week's theme brought two things to mind for me. Both are damaged. But chipped can mean something is damaged and has lost all it's value. Or chipped can show how things have endured through time and the look even becomes popular to copy - particularly with houses and wanting to make new construction look old. I've chosen to illustrate both sides of "chipped".

1. This literally made me ill. I am a dish collector and this is a hard to find piece of vintage Fiesta. It's a promotional figure 8 tray in turquoise that was only sold for a short time. It also comes in a cobalt version, which was much more common, though it's not so easy to find either. I bought this tray on eBay and it was poorly packed. Eventually I was able to replace this with a flawless tray, but it took me several years to find one.


2. The other way I am looking at chipped is to view it as things that endure through time. This is often seen in older houses and in older cities. Many times old brick will be covered with stucco or plaster to make it look newer. Then as time passes, the plaster begins to fall off. People begin to appreciate the charm of such a look. Here are three views of the same chipped plaster on a building in New Orleans. I see things like this copied on HGTV all the time. But the remakes seldom really match the real thing.







And although I didn't do it on purpose, I just realised that both my views of chipped feature turquoise. Must be some kind of synchronicity involved.
